How Meta labels AI generated ads, and what it means for your brand
Published 15 October 2026
What Meta's AI info label is, when it appears on Facebook and Instagram ads, and how to plan for it.
If you run ads on Facebook or Instagram with AI made images or video, some of them will carry an AI info label. Here is how it works, according to Meta.
When the label appears
Meta says it labels ad images created or significantly edited using its own generative AI features, or created or edited using third party AI tools, with AI info. Minor changes such as resizing or colour correction generally do not trigger it (Meta Help Centre).
Meta has said it uses industry standard detection methods such as C2PA metadata to identify content made with third party AI tools (Social Media Today, July 2026).
Where people see it
The label appears in the About this ad screen from the three dot menu, and sometimes next to the Sponsored label (Meta Help Centre).
Political and social issue ads are stricter
For ads about social issues, elections or politics, Meta already requires advertisers to disclose when images, video or audio are created or edited with AI (Meta Help Centre).
What we suggest
- Assume the label may appear and make ads you are happy to have labelled.
- Do not try to strip metadata to avoid labels. It undermines trust if found out.
- Focus AI on product shots, scenes and motion, where a label rarely bothers anyone.
Meta updates these policies often, so check the Help Centre before a big campaign.
